Hotel Grand Pacific Gives Locals a Sneak Peek of Tantalus Vinyards' New Vintages

Two opportunities for Victorians to be among the first to try new releases from Okanagan winery

February 29, 2012; Victoria, B.C. – With a cult-like following among wine enthusiasts, a new vintage from the Okanagan’s Tantalus Vineyards is a much-anticipated affair. This year, Hotel Grand Pacific is partnering with the winery to offer Victorians two special opportunities to be among the first to try the new vintage releases: a winemaker’s dinner on Sunday, March 18; and a one-hour Flights & Light Bites seminar on Saturday, April 7.

“The wines from Tantalus Vineyards are fantastic; both food-friendly and deliciously quaffable,” said Janis Goard, Hotel Grand Pacific’s Food & Beverage Director. “By having two events, we’re able to offer both an exclusive, six-course dinner with winemaker, David Paterson, as well as a more casual tasting with food pairings as part of our on-going Flights & Light Bites series.”

The Tantalus winemaker’s dinner is limited to just 26 guests, who will join David Paterson in The Mark restaurant on Sunday, March 18 to taste through the new vintage offerings. Each wine will be paired with a course created by Executive Sous Chef Ian Goard, with the menu as follows:

Foie Gras Torchon
Elk Sausage, Wild Rice Cornbread
Compressed Melon and Crab
Tantalus Riesling, 2010
Seared Sea Bass
Manila Clam Farro Risotto
Dashi Broth, Smoked Mussels
Tantalus Old Vines Riesling, 2008

Confit Pheasant Leg
Sautéed Pears and Swiss Chard
Quince Purée, Hazelnut Cream
Tantalus Chardonnay, 2010
Rack of Rabbit
Shredded Rabbit Ravioli
Pea Purée, Morel and Mustard Demi
Tantalus Rosé, 2010
Pink Grapefruit Ice
Roasted Boar Shortloin
Baked Butter Beans, Salt Roasted Beets
Oxheart Plum Gastrique
Tantalus Pinot Noir, 2010
Macadamia Nut and Caramelized Pineapple Cake
Mango Crème Brûlée and Coconut Mousse
Tantalus Riesling Ice Wine, 2010

For those looking for a more laidback opportunity to taste the new Tantalus vintage, the one-hour Flights & Light Bites tasting event is the perfect way to not only try the wines, but also to learn about pairing them with food. Starting at 4pm on Saturday, April 7, Carmen Parry, one of the hotel’s seven sommeliers, will take participants through the new vintage, answering questions in an informal atmosphere.

Tickets for the Tantalus winemaker’s dinner are $125 per person (inclusive of taxes and gratuities). For those wishing to make a night of it, a special room rate of $115 is offered, which also includes parking. Tickets for the Flights & Light Bites tasting event are $20 per person (plus taxes and gratuities). Reservations for both events can be made by calling 250.380.4478.
