Silver Glass Award confirms "The Pacific" as Victoria's top spot for wine lovers

VPIWF award is the highest garnered by any restaurant on Vancouver Island

April 6, 2011; Victoria, B.C. – Located in downtown Victoria’s Hotel Grand Pacific, The Pacific Restaurant has won the Vancouver Playhouse International Wine Festival Wine Awards’ Silver Glass, recognising the restaurant’s long-held commitment to its wine program. It was the top ranked Vancouver Island restaurant in the 2011 awards, and the only one to garner the Silver Glass.

“Wining the Silver Glass is a great recognition of our passion for the wine program at The Pacific,” said Janis Goard, the hotel’s Wine Director. “Whether a guest is an expert oenophile or a casual quaffer, we want them to have an exceptional food and wine-pairing experience, leaving with an even greater appreciation for what a well-chosen glass of wine can bring to a meal.”

This is the second year in a row that the Vancouver Playhouse International Wine Festival has awarded the Silver Glass to The Pacific. Restaurants submitted both wine lists and menus to the festival’s judging committee before being judged on key criteria including the philosophy behind the restaurant’s wine program, wine and food pairing, wine education for staff, the user-friendliness of the wine list, and value for consumers. The accolade joins the Wine Spectator Award of Excellence won by The Hotel Grand Pacific’s fine dining restaurant, The Mark, for the past six consecutive years.  The Hotel Grand Pacific also has a long history of support for enhancing the wine experience: it was instrumental in bringing world-class wine education to Vancouver Island back in 2003, partnering with the International Sommelier Guild to offer its professional courses through the hotel.

Both The Pacific and The Mark offer an on-going calendar of wine and spirits experiences for enthusiasts. Capped at just 26 guests, intimate wine dinners at The Mark offer a rare chance for diners to connect one-on-one with wine makers and winery principals. The next dinner, being held on April 7th, will pair the wines of Washington State’s L’Ecole No. 41 with the contemporary regional cuisine of Hotel Grand Pacific Chef Ian Goard. The Pacific’s hallmark event of the summer, The Swine and the Vine, takes advantage of the restaurant’s sunny terrace with an afternoon soiree that celebrates the best of British Columbia’s food and wine. This year’s event will be held on July 23, and will be part of Taste, Victoria’s festival of food and wine. The hotel is also home to the annual Victoria Whisky Festival, held in January of each year and widely regarded as one of North America’s best whisky events.

The Hotel Grand Pacific is a four-Diamond property conveniently located on the Inner Harbour in downtown Victoria.  With 304 spacious guestrooms and suites, the Hotel Grand Pacific is renowned for delivering an exceptional and personalized guest service experience. With a focus on health and wellness, the hotel offers complimentary access to the Victoria Athletic Club, located on-site.
