Wine Spectator again honours “The Mark” with Award of Excellence
WINE SPECTATOR AGAIN HONOURS “THE MARK” WITH AWARD OF EXCELLENCE
The renowned magazine recognizes the restaurant’s wine list for well-chosen selection and menu pairing
August 12, 2011; Victoria, B.C. – Located in downtown Victoria’s Hotel Grand Pacific, The Mark Restaurant has once again received Wine Spectator’s “Award of Excellence” for its wine list. This is the sixth year in a row that the restaurant has received the award, joining other recent accolades in underlining the hotel’s long-standing commitment to bringing a world-class wine program to Victoria.
The Mark is an intimate and gracious 26-seat dining room that features more than 400 wines from around the globe, chosen to complement the room’s fine dining menu. With an emphasis on wines from the “new world,” the restaurant’s list also features an extensive selection of wines, cider and sake by the glass.
“This award honours the work of our team, lead by Restaurant Manager, Jeremy Pott,” said Janis Goard, the Hotel Grand Pacific’s Director of Food & Beverage and certified Sommelier. “Their wine training and extensive knowledge of the wine list translates into a great wine experience for our discerning diners.”
The Hotel Grand Pacific has built a strong wine program through education and experience. The property was instrumental in bringing internationally-recognised wine instruction to Vancouver Island, and has hosted delivery of the International Sommelier Guild (ISG) programs at the hotel since 2003. The hotel has seven certified Sommeliers on staff, and every member of restaurant service team has completed at least one level of ISG certification.
Earlier this year, the Vancouver Playhouse International Wine Festival awarded the hotel a Silver Glass Award for The Pacific’s wine list. This was the only Silver Glass Award presented to any restaurant on Vancouver Island or the Gulf Islands.
Goard, Pott and their team constantly taste, evaluate, compare, teach and learn. “Our wine menu continues to evolve,” says Goard. “Recently a strong focus on local and organic wines has influenced the choices on our list. We’ve introduced a Sustainable Wines program to further complement our commitment to culinary sustainability, which at the same time supports our food and wine philosophy.”
Along with its internationally lauded wine list and commitment to the highest standards of wine education and service, The Mark also holds regular wine dinners to bring wine-loving diners closer to those making their favourite bottles. The next wine dinner will be on Sunday, September 25 and will feature will feature SakeOne from Oregon. The dinner is limited to a maximum of 26 seats and costs $125.
